Robert David Sauerländer was the son of publisher Heinrich Remigius Sauerländer (1821-1896), owner of J. D. Sauerländer's publishing house, located at Finkenhofstraße 2 in Frankfurt. He initially did a book-based training at Abendroth in Frankfurt, followed by the publishing house Trübner in Strasbourg and Hertz in Berlin. In 1893 he entered the publishing house of his father, whom he took over after his death in 1896. Despite the turmoil of the First World War and the subsequent inflation, the publishing house was able to secure its existence. He specialized in economics, forestry and classical philology. As there were no offspring, he sold the publishing house and domicile to his authorized representative Albrecht Gruber (1902-1973), who had been working for fourteen years. 1939-1946, when he was in war service and captivity, he supported his wife once again in the leadership of the publishing house.
