Peter Simmel
Peter Simmel (born June 7, 1959) is a German retailer. He runs a regional Edeka chain of 20 stores in Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria, which employs around 1,000 people.
Born in Bavaria, shortly after reunification, he went to Saxony, where he opened his first business in Chemnitz-Mittelbach in 1990. In the year 2000 his company already reached the sales mark of 50 million euro. In 2005 he opened the first supermarket in Bavaria. In 2008, the Group generated sales of 106 million euros.
From June 2005 to January 2010 he was the successor of Jörg Hieber as Chairman of the Edeka Group, since January 10, 2010 he is a member of the Supervisory Board.
In 2010, the public prosecutor's office in Chemnitz determined that the Ver.di trade union was suspicious of fraudulent social fraud and suspected of unlawful supervision of employees. He then stepped back from his post. Simmel's successor as Edeka's supervisory board was Adolf Scheck. The allegations against Simmel were weakened in the aftermath by the judiciary.
Already at the end of April 2009, Simmel made headlines when, with a two-engine Cessna 421, he survived an emergency water landing in the Mühlenberger Loch near Hamburg with only minor injuries. Single-level Edit source text
