Louis Howard Miller (born February 4, 1935 in Baltimore) is an American parasitologist who deals with malaria.
Miller graduated from Haverford College in 1956, his M.D degree in Medicine 1960 at Washington University. He completed his specialist training at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York (1960/61 Internship, 1961-1963 Residency at Mount Sinai and Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx). In 1964 he received a Master of Science degree from Columbia University. In 1964/65, he was a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health at the Cedar Sinai Medical Center and researched 1965 to 1967 at the SEATO Medical Research Laboratories in Bangkok. From 1967 he was assistant professor and then professor for tropical medicine at the Columbia University Medical Faculty. From 1971 to 1992 he directed the malaria department of the laboratory for parasitic diseases. He has been Head of the Department of Parasitic Diseases since 1995 and is Head of the Department of Cell Biology of Malaria at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases where he has been since 1992.
From 1979 to 1987, he was in the WHO Executive Committee in his program on malaria immunization. From 1989 he was president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
He researched, among other things, the ways in which malaria pathogens attach to the red blood cells and penetrate into them. For example, they identified the Duffy Antigen (DARC) on the surface of red blood cells (a receptor for various chemokines) as the receptor for Plasmodium vivax.
In 1985, he received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstädter Prize. He also received the sixth Bristol Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Infectious Disease Research and the Commonwealth Award. Miller is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for Advancement of Science and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He is an honorary member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
He has been married since 1959 and has a child. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Single-level Edit source text Standard data (person): LCCN: n77010475 VIAF: 40621883 Wikipedia People Search
