Ildefonso Elorreaga was born in the village of Aspurú in Alava, Spain, in 1782. He died in Chile at the Battle of Chacabuco on February 12, 1817.

He came very young to Chile. He married Manuela Díaz de Salcedo. He joined the army, but soon gave up his arms to engage in commerce in Concepción.

Arriving the realist Antonio Pareja to this city, he named Elorreaga commander of cavalry militias. It participated in the battles of 1813 and 1814, contributing actively in the defeat of the patriots in the Disaster of Rancagua.

He was head of the district of Coquimbo and the 13 of November of 1816 commander of the military canton of Aconcagua
