Flag of Corsica
The flag of Corsica, symbol of its national independence.
The Flag of Corsica was adopted by the General of the Nation Pasquale di Paoli in 1755 and was based on the traditional flag used previously. It depicts a black Moor head carrying a white bandana on the forehead on a white background. Previously, the bandana covered the eyes; Paoli modified the bandana to place it on the forehead to symbolize the liberation of the Corsican people.
It was used by the Republic of Corsica and was banned after 1769, when France took possession of the island that was formerly ruled by the Republic of Genoa to pay a pending debt and end the endemic rebellion on the island. It was used as an official flag when the United Kingdom occupied it in 1793. It fell into disuse until 1980, when readopted as a regional flag.
The Moor's head also appears in the Shield of Corsica, as well as in the flag, in the Shield of Aragon and in the one of Sardinia.
