Demetrio of Escepsis

Demetrius of Scepsis was a Greek grammarian, contemporary of Aristarchus and Crates (Strabo xiii, 609). Demetrio came from a good family and was a philologist of great acuteness (Laercio v. 84). He was the author of an extremely extensive work and is often referred to as: Τρωικὸς διάκοσμος. It consisted of thirty books and was a historical and geographical commentary on the section of the second book of the Iliad known as the catalog of Trojans where Trojan forces are listed (compare Harpocracy v. Ἀδράστειον, Θυργωνίδαι; ad Apolonium i. 1123, 1165). Sometimes Strabo calls it "the Escepsio" and others, simply Demetrio. The numerous passages in which Demetrius of Scepsis is mentioned or quoted were collected by Westermann in the work of Vossius, De Hist. Graec., P. 179, & c.
