The farandola is a traditional French dance typical of Provence. It comes from different types of medieval dance.
Participants shake hands with each other to form a chain and mark each time with skips. An "abbat-mage" (the one who directs the dance), holding a halberd adorned with ribbons, drives the chain.
In Nice we find different varieties of farandola with different modifications in its steps: the brandi, the mauresque (or mourisca), the pass cariera (the Spanish parades).
