Central Nuclear Joseph M. Farley
The Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Plant consists of two twin units located near Dothan, Alabama. Its surface area of 7.4 km² in Houston County, Alabama in a mostly agricultural and forestry environment.
This plant has two Westinghouse pressure water reactors:
The construction of the plant began in 1970. Unit 1 entered commercial operation in December 1977. Unit 2 did so in July 1981. The total cost of the plant was about 1.57 billion dollars .
Its operation is carried out by Southern Nuclear Operation Company, being owned by Alabama Power Company (a subsidiary of Southern Company) and its name was imposed in honor of the first president of the company and previous CEO (Principal General) of Southern Nuclear Operating Company.
Unit 1 was closed for a short period of time because of a problem with the control rods but was re-started on June 22, 2005.
