Barrio Balbastro

The Barrio Balbastro is a housing complex that is located in the Bajo Flores, city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It was built in 1948, by management of the Municipality of the City of Buenos Aires. It was one of the social housing projects of the first stage of the presidency of Juan Domingo Perón (1946/1952), characterized by innovation in the style of constructions with respect to those previously built by bodies such as the National Commission of Houses Cockroaches (1915/1944). The Justicialismo used as pictures of housing the picturesque Californian villa and the simple monoblock, and to this last corresponds the Barrio Balbastro.

The complex is composed of 6 buildings with "strip" plant, of the type known as monoblock, a format widely used in Argentina since that time. They have ground floor and two high floors, and 18 apartments each (6 per floor), with access to the upper floors by stairs in the interior. The fronts have large windows reminiscent of rationalist homes, traversing the corridors of access to the apartments on the upper floors. The Barrio Balbastro has 108 housing units, and has its own water tank and a large park within which monoblocks are arranged, in two rows of three buildings each.
