Alger "Texas" Alexander

Alger "Texas" Alexander (September 12, 1900 - April 16, 1954) was an American blues singer born in Jewett, Texas.

He was a short man with a deep and deep voice, starting his musical career in the streets, local parties and picnics of the lowlands of Brazos River, where he worked with Blind Lemon Jefferson. In 1927 he made his first recordings, which continued in the 1930s; in this period he made recordings for Okeh Records and Vocalion Records in the cities of New York, San Antonio and Fort Worth.

Alexander played no musical instrument but worked over the years with musicians such as King Oliver, Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson, Mississippi Sheiks and his cousin Lightnin 'Hopkins; likewise, he used to sing in the free rhythms of the songs of work.

In 1939, Alexander murdered his wife, being sentenced to five years in prison in Paris, Texas, from 1940 to 1945. After serving his sentence, he returned to the performances and recordings until his death by syphilis in 1954 .
