State elections of Saxony-Anhalt 2002
The 2002 state election of Saxony-Anhalt was held on 21 April 2002 to elect members of the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt. Results
The results were: Post-election
The populist Schill party right after its success in Hamburg failed to win seats in the Saxon-Anhalt parliament or any other Landtag. The SPD-PDS government no longer had enough seats to stay in power, and Wolfgang Böhmer (CDU) was able to form a new government in coalition with the FDP, which had an extraordinary victory (13%).
After the unexpected victory for the FDP, party leader Guido Westerwelle declared that his party was "for the whole people." The FDP nominated him "chancellor candidate". It was the first time the party did it (the "chancellor candidates" are usually nominated by the CDU / CSU and the SPD, so the FDP campaign was largely taken seriously).
Five months before the federal election, this result was a major defeat for Gerhard Schröder's red-green government and weakened his position in the Bundesrat.
