Dresden Crystal Palace


Before the Second World War, the Kristallpalast Dresden was one of the largest ballrooms of the Dresden West. The dance and entertainment center was located in the Friedrichstadt district. Besides the similar name, there is no similarity with today's cinema Ufa-Kristallpalast in Dresden.

The Kristallpalast was built in the 19th century from the Gasthof Zum Elephanten. Until 1860, the private theater by Amalie Auguste Magnus was in the building. According to the book Dresdner Puppenspielmosaik the widow Magnus anno 1849 the following sentence for the takeover of the theater shall have said "The Deader of the blurring I am weidr". One of the most famous guests of the theater was Friedrich Gerstäcker. In honor of the theater he wrote the stage piece Kunibert von Eulenhorst.

In the period between 30 November and 2 December 1934, the Judo European Championships took place for the first time in the Kristallpalast. The organizer of the championship was at the time the Judo in the Fachamt Schwerathletik of the Nationalsozialistische Reichsbund für Leibesübungen (NSRD). The organizer of the tournament was the 1st Dresden Jiu Jitsu Club.
