In caving, a stone ledge or mantel is a speleothema growing on the edges of elements that touch the surface of a lake: castings, stalagmites, columns, etc. They can reach a thickness of a few tens of centimeters, or just a few millimeters. Its formation depends on a maintained level and an accretion point, such as floating calcite that adheres to the edge of the lake or to the walls of some espeleotema submerged in part. They can be used to identify old groundwater levels.
