Vicryl or Novosyn polyglactin 910 is a type of absorbable, synthetic, multifilament and interlaced suture. It is indicated for the approximation and ligation of soft tissues, and maintains its tensile strength for approximately three to four weeks in the tissue, maintaining 60-65% of its tensile strength at 14 days and 30% at the 28-30 days. Vicryl can also be treated in a way to obtain a faster healing of fabrics or impregnated with triclosan to provide antimicrobial protection to the suture line. The vicryl is a suture widely used in fascias and small vessels to make transfixions, to make jars in appendages, among other uses. Although the term "Vicryl" is a trademark of Ethicon, it has been generalized by to any synthetic absorbable suture made primarily from polyglycolic acid.
Vicryl can be used on the skin, but its capillarity should be blocked with a topical antibiotic and should be removed like any other skin suture. If it is used in the urinary system, it should not be placed where it has contact with the urine.
