The Autonomist
Autonomist and L'Autonomista was a newspaper published in Gerona, Spain between the end of the 19th century (the first issue will go on sale in 1898) and the end of the Spanish Civil War (the last issue appeared on 25 January 1939), founded by Dàrius Rahola i LLorens. Like many other newspapers of the time, it was closely linked to a political-social ideology, in this case the federal republicanism in the first half (Restoration) and the Republican Esquerra de Catalunya, shortly after the Second Republic began, although these profiles were not never strict.
It was published as a weekly or biannual until 1920 that was already daily, in Spanish fundamentally until 1933, the year in which Catalan began to use mostly. With the end of the Civil War, the newspaper, its printing press and the assets of the Rahola family were confiscated by the Franco dictatorship. In 1985 the head of the newspaper was recovered by the Rahola family and is published as a literary supplement every five years, with the fundamental purpose of not losing ownership.
