Robert Swindells


Robert E. Swindells is an English author of children's literature born on March 20, 1939 in Bradford, UK.

Born in Bradford, the first of five children, Swindells worked for a local newspaper after leaving the 15-year-old school. He served with the Royal Air Force and held various jobs before training as a teacher. His first novel, When the Darkness Comes (1973), written while still in formation. Swindells combined teaching with writing until 1980, decided to devote himself to writing.

He won the Children's Book Prize for Reading with Brother on Earth in 1984, a novel in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, the author manifested in his time in favor of the campaign for nuclear disarmament. He also won the important Carnegie Prize with the novel Cold Stones, for which he had to live like a homeless man for some nights on the streets of London.
