Jesus Maria River
The Jesus Maria River is a Costa Rican river from the Pacific Ocean slope. It descends from the western slope of the mountains of the Aguacate, in several arms, receives the waters of the rivers Paires and Surubres of the same origin and ends in the Pacific in the cove of Tivives.
On the river Jesus Maria was built in the mid-1840s a famous stone bridge, which is still standing and is known as the Bridge of the Ladies, because its construction was financed with the contribution of ladies and girls of the main towns of Costa Rica, as part of the national effort to build a highway between San José and Puntarenas to export coffee.
