Christian Pongruber

Christian Pongruber was born as a child of a peasant family in the Siggerwiesen district of Bergheim. After attending the Volks- und Hauptschule, he worked for a short time as an employee. In 1940, he became a soldier for the armed forces, where he served until 1945. After his return to Austria, Pongruber took over the farm of his parents as a farmer.
Pongruber began his political career in 1949, when he was elected to the municipal council of Bergheim for the ÖVP. In 1954 - following the death of the acting mayor Paul Gierlinger - the election of Pongrubers to the mayor of his home community. Christian Pongruber sat for 35 years in the mayor's office of Bergheim; only in 1989 did he withdraw from all political functions.
In December 1959 Pongruber was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council; he remained a federal council until July 1965. From 1968 to 1969 he sat for a short time as a deputy for the ÖVP in the Salzburger Landtag.
