Big Fletchit
Big Fletchit (* May 16, 1916 in Colón, Panama as Owen Campbell, 15 September 1983 in Dusseldorf) was a jazz drummer who played for many years in Germany.
Fletchit has played jazz since the age of 12; he soon appeared with Panama jazz greats including the orchestra of the saxophonist Frank J. Jeanmarie and was a member of George Maycock y su Chimbombo in the 1940s. His nickname is based on the external similarity with the Panamanian dancer "Steppin 'Fletchit". With the dance and music show of Jaime Camino, which also belonged to the band of George Maycock, he came to Europe in 1949. He joined George Maycock's "Chic Combo" and met his second wife, Ruth, in Hamburg, where he lived in Düsseldorf. Since the middle of the 1950s he played then in the George Maycock quintet or Trio until the death of the bandleader. In 1976 Campbell founded his "Panorama" trio with Jürgen Dahmen and Wally Böcker. Besides his work as a drummer, he composed Jazztitel and also Schlager u. a. for Mona Baptiste. He was considered the "German Gene Krupa" for fans.
