On 26 January 1994, he beat South Africans November Ntshingila for the vacant international title of the WBC and won by unanimous decision. In the following year he became European champion by a point victory over the French Jacobin Yoma.
On April 25, 1999, he became world champion of WBO when he defeated the undefeated Arnulfo Castillo by technical knockout. in round 1 hit.
