Ailianos (Platoniker)

Ailianos (Greek Αἰλιανός Ailianós, Latin Aelianus), for the distinction of Ailianos the Platonists, was an ancient philosopher. He probably lived in the 2nd century; in any case, his lifetime falls into the epoch of middle-classism.

Ailianos wrote a commentary on Plato's dialogue Timaios in (at least) two books. Only fragments of this work have survived. Apart from that, nothing is known of Ailianos' life and work. The Neoplatonist Porphyrios quotes the Timaeus comment several times, partly in detail, in his commentary on the harmony of Claudios Ptolemy; he considers a musical-theoretical concept of Ailianos, which he reproduces, as Pythagorean. Matthias Baltes assumes that Ailianos did not comment on the Timaios as a whole, but only on a musical-theoretical aspect. Text Output Edit the source text Edit source text Edit the source text
