Wanderkessel

The Wanderkessel is a police strategy for the containment of potentially violent demonstrators. A dense ring of police officers surrounds the demonstration train and makes it impossible for participants to leave the train. The Wanderkessel was introduced in Berlin under the interior manager Wilhelm A. Kewenig (1981-1989) and since then frequently used.

The kettle is often criticized because it can also be aggressive on peaceful demonstrators and can provoke violence. Like any police chair, it makes it impossible for peaceful protesters to escape at the outbreak of violent acts.

Sometimes a demonstration called Out of Control is used to avoid wanderkill.
