Martin de Loayza

Martín de Loayza (also registered as Loaiza) was a Peruvian mestizo painter and painter whose work is cataloged around 1648 in Cusco.

He worked the chiaroscuro technique. Among his disciples were Pedro Pizarro, Juan Beltrán and José Barrientos. It is presumed of its authorship an Adoration of the shepherds, dated towards 1663, ordered by the mercedarios and that today is in the convent of the Recoleta. That same year was contracted, once again by the Mercedarians to gild and to uphold the altarpiece of San Pedro Nolasco. It should be mentioned that Martin de Loayza was one of the painters who participated in the series of San Francisco, for the convent of Lima of the same name.

Loayza is a representative of the Cuzco School of Painting. In 1648 he was already a teacher and received apprentices in his workshop, among them Pedro Pizarro. On May 26, 1663 he committed to gild and incarnate the figures of the altarpiece of San Pedro Nolasco in the Church of La Merced del Cusco; for the painting would be given 1,100 pesos, as recorded in the Historical Archives of Cusco. His paintings include The Adoration of the Shepherds, this painting is found in the Church of the Recoleta of Cusco, the Martyrdom of St. Stephen and the Conversion of St. Paul, in the Church of La Merced, in the same city, 1663. < / p>
