José Cubiles
José Antonio Cubiles Ramos (born 15 May 1894 in Cádiz, † 5 April 1971 in Madrid) was a Spanish pianist and music teacher.
Cubiles began playing the piano at the age of five and was promoted by the director of the music school of Cádiz because of his great talent. At the Conservatory of Madrid, he studied with Pilar Fernández de la Mora, with the assistance of the Infanta Doña Isabel de Borbón, and received prizes in the fields of music theory, harmonica and piano. He later studied in Paris with Louis Diémer. In 1914 he received the First Piano Prize at the Conservatoire de Paris, and two years later he began to teach at the Conservatory of Madrid. Among his students were Joaquín Achúcarro, Guillermo González, María Orán and Manuel Carra.
In addition, Cubiles successfully pursued a career as a pianist: he had solo performances, played as a soloist piano concertos and worked as a chamber musician, a. with Jacques Thibaud, Paul Kochanski and Gaspar Cassadó. His interpretations of the works of Spanish composers such as Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados and Joaquín Turina or Fryderyk Chopins have become famous. A close friendship connected him to Manuel de Falla, who entrusted him with the Symphony Orchestra of Madrid under the direction of Enrique Fernández Arbós in 1916 with the premiere of his Noches en los jardines de España.
