Incident of Amakasu

The Amakasu-jiken Incident occurred on September 16, 1923 during the chaos following the Kanto earthquake of 1923. For fear that anarchists would take advantage of the catastrophe to overthrow the government, a squad of Kenpeitai (military police) commanded by lieutenant Masahiko Amakasu arrested Sakae Ōugi, Noe Itō and Sakae's nephew as young as six. They were lynched and their bodies were thrown into a pit.
The murder of these well-known anarchists, as well as the child, surprised and scandalized many Japanese. The author of the crime, Masahiko Amakasu, was sentenced to ten years in prison but was released after three years. Popular culture
