Since 1998, the Deutsche Generationenfilmpreis has been a platform for both young and old filmmakers. The German Generation Film Festival promotes the cinematic creativity of the elderly and presents its productions in a publicly effective manner. Young filmmakers, the competition provides a forum for contributions from age and aging and motivates to cinematic multi-generational projects.

The focus of the German Generation Film Festival is the life experience and the feeling of life of different generations. Concerns, wishes, hopes, but also fears can be discussed here. The competition provides a framework for presenting and questioning what the generations are connecting - or separating. It brings together young and older filmmakers, sharpens the view for prejudice and presents unusual generations. They ask for honest stories, the critical view of social conditions - and all aspects of the coexistence of young and old.

The competition was developed in 1997 by the German Children's and Youth Film Center (KJF) and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and launched in 1998 as a federal competition "Video of Generations". Under this name it was implemented until 2016. Filmmaking up to 25 and over 50 years, who are not professionally active in the film sector, can take part.
