Calle 21 de Mayo
The street 21 de Mayo is a roadway that crosses the center of the city of Santiago, Chile. Its name remembers the date of the Naval Combat of Iquique, that happened 21 of May of 1879.
History
In the Colony, the street was known as the «Calle de la PescaderÃa», because the first fish sales in the city were established there. Later, in century XIX, it changed its name to "Street of the Never", since near the Plaza of Arms settled the sellers of snow of the Mountain range of the $ andes. Milestones
It extends from the Plaza de Armas, as a continuation of Paseo Estado, next to the building of the Illustrious Municipality of Santiago, to the Central Market.
The street is pedestrian between the Monjitas streets in the south (where there is an exit from the Plaza de Armas station of the Santiago Metro), and Rosas in the north, except for a short segment for vehicles that serves as an exit to the street Diagonal Cervantes; from Rosas continue north as a vehicular street, until its intersection with the street Ismael Valdés Vergara, in front of Prat Square, where is the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique.
