Harald Popp (* September 30, 1956 in Erlangen) is a German electrical engineer. He was involved in the development of the MP3 format, or the audio compression process, and is one of his fathers, alongside Bernhard Grill and Karlheinz Brandenburg. BiographyChange source
After graduation in 1975, he studied at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (1981 degree as a diploma engineer in electrical engineering). From 1982 to 1984 he worked on a technology transfer project for the cable fault location of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Since 1985 he has been a member of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen. Since 1987 he is responsible for DSP-based real-time audio coding systems. He is now Head of the Department "Multimedia Real-Time Systems", his research focus is the development of effective real-time implementations of audio and video coding methods.
