Given (Thrace)
Dato (in Greek, Δάτος) is the name of an ancient Greek city of Thrace as well as the district where it was located.
Herodotus quotes it as the place where the Athenian died in the year 465 BC. C. fighting at the head of his army against the edones for gold mines.
According to the Periplo of Pseudo-Escilax was built by Calistratus.
Strabo places it - along the towns of Mircino, Argilo and Drabesco - in the Estrimónico gulf and it emphasizes its fertile territory, its gold mines and its naval shipyards. Of Dato was dependent the city of Neápolis and in its territory they lived odomantos, edones and bisaltes.
The territory of Dato was conquered by Philip II of Macedonia who founded the city of Philippi and absorbed the territory of both Dato and another city called Crénides.
It has been suggested that it could have been located on a hill called Vasilaki, near the town of Amigdaleonas.
