Federico Borrell

Federico Borrell García "The Taino" (January 3, 1912 - September 5, 1936) was a Spanish anarchist who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the CNT militias and is known worldwide for having been portrayed his death in combat by photographer Robert Capa in the snapshot Death of a militiaman. Born in Benilloba (Alicante), he founded the local section of the Libertarian Youth.

Federico Borrell died in Espejo (Córdoba) on September 5, 1936 at the age of 24. Photographer Robert Capa portrayed the moment of his death in the snapshot known as Death of a Militiaman. The veracity of the photo has been questioned, although some investigations seem to prove that the photo is real, and others, without denying that the photo shows a real death, doubt the identity of the dead militiaman.

The photo was published on September 23, 1936 in the French magazine VU, becoming one of the most well-known snapshots not only of the Spanish Civil War but also of war photography. Notes
