Ajatche
Ajatche was the name of the capital of the kingdom of Aja of Adja in the present-day Republic of Benin.
Ajatche was probably founded in the 16th century by Te Agdanlin, a descendant of the royal dynasty of Ardra. The city was later called by the Portuguese, who established a trading post there in the seventeenth century to ship African slaves to America, called Porto Novo.
When the city, or all Aja, became a French protectorate on 23 February 1863, the name of Ajatche is finally past.
