Robert Dover
Representation of the Cotswold Games. Robert Dover (1575-1641) was a lawyer and English captain known for being the founder and director for many years of the Cotswold Games, games that began to celebrate in 1604 in protest of growing puritanism in his country . This competition, which was held annually, consisted of tests of gymnastics, hammer throwing, wrestling, dancing and horse racing among others, where those who managed to win received valuable prizes. The games lasted up to three years after Dover's death and were later revived after the English restoration until 1852. In 1963 they reactivated the games, being an active event today.
