Mateo I Orsini

Mateo I Orsini was the son of Ricardo Orsini and grandson of Margaritone of Brindisi. In 1197, when his grandfather was imprisoned, his father took power in the name of Matthew I, and when Margaritone died, around 1203, he inherited Kefalonia and Zante where he ruled until 1238.

In 1238 the news disappears and probably died young, but the Orsini remained in possession of the fief, since in 1260 appears as count son Ricardo I Orsini. Probably from 1238 to 1260 he acted as regent of this son, the wife of Mateo I, Ana Angela, daughter of the sebastocrátor Juan I of Zoe Ducas (granddaughter of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelo).
