Joachim-Joseph d'Estaing was born in Ravel in 1652 or 1654; he was the son of Jean d'Estaing, Marquis de Saillans, Lord of Ravel and Nechers, and the Claude de Combourcier du Terrail de Bayard. He was a member of the cathedral chapter of Lyon (titled Count of Lyon) and Prior of St. Irenaeus ibid. In 1693, he was appointed bishop of Saint-Flour, he was consecrated on 3 January 1694 in the chapel of the Jesuit novitiate in Paris. He soon went to his diocese, but, unlike his predecessor, La Mothe, did not live there very much. In 1709, he was forced to retreat to Saillans Castle for a while, as a result of a famine caused by a miserable famine in his residence. In 1715 he was one of the presidents of the French National Council. Bishop Estaing died on 13 April 1742 as Doyen of the French episcopate.
