Union of Arras

The union of Arras was an agreement signed on January 5, 1579 in the city of Arras whereby some southern provinces of the Netherlands recognized the sovereignty of Philip II in the framework of the Eighty Years' War. Some of the territories that formed these provinces have been part of France since 1659.

The provinces of Namur, Luxembourg and the Duchy of Limburg, despite being supportive of the Arras union, did not sign the agreement.
The response of the rebellious provinces was the Utrecht union signed a few days later.
