Underground

A fenced basement in Groningen, Netherlands

Souterrain (from French sous-terrain for 'underground') or low-floor is a synonym for the lower floor or the cellar floor of a building. Often, the basement is only half below the earth's surface and can then be fenced. The floor above is then a half-storey above the earth's surface. A floor (floor) is generally spoken only if the corresponding rooms are used for the living or permanent residence of persons and are designed accordingly. The term is often used in housing advertisements for whole or partial flats below ground level ("subterranean flat to rent ...") and can have euphemism as a patronizing function.

Since, according to certain building regulations, only a few centimeters below ground level were counted or counted as a basement, they allow a further lettable level.
