The German Bradsot, Syn. Necrotizing Hepatitis, is a non-contagious gas edema caused by Clostridium novyi B, which occurs very rarely in horses and pigs, especially in sheep, but also in other ruminants. "Bradsot" is Norwegian and is called "fast plague."

After oral uptake of the bacterial spores, a manifestation occurs in the liver when lesions have arisen there by migrating parasite stages (eg Leberegel). Centrilobular liver necroses develop, after a few hours the death occurs because of the massive toxin formation of the pathogen. Affected are mainly over one year old, well-fed sheep. Usually the disease is peracute, occasionally swelling in the lower jaw area, teeth gnashing, tightness and strained breathing can occur.

Therapy experiments are usually unsuccessful. Metaphylactically, other animals of the herd can be actively or passively immunized. In vulnerable areas vaccination with a polyvalent Clostridia vaccine is recommended in spring. Edit source text
