McCorkle grew up as the youngest three brothers in Spartanburg (South Carolina). After school and a multi-year service with the US Navy, among other things aboard the USS Iowa battleship, he and his friend Toy Caldwell founded The Toy Factory. In 1971, he was again a founding member of the Marshall Tucker Band, with Caldwell, who quickly made a name for herself with her own style mix of southern rock, country and jazz. For the fourth album of the band, Searchin 'For A Rainbow (1975), he wrote the classic Fire on the Mountain, of which countless cover versions are now available.
McCorkle left the band in 1984, moved to Tennessee, and then worked mainly as a songwriter for various bands and solo artists. He is co-author of the song Cowboy Blues, which the country singer Gary Allan played in 1999. In the same year McCorkle released his solo album American Street.
In June 2007 he succumbed to cancer. He left his wife and a son. Weblinks Edit sourcetext
