Emmanuel Marie Philippe Louis Lafont received the priestly ordination on 2 August 1970.

Pope John Paul II appointed him as bishop of Cayenne on 18 June 2004. The archbishop of Fort-de-France and Saint-Pierre, Gilbert Marie Michel Méranville, gave him the bishop's consecration on the 29th of August, Co-conspirators were Ernest Mesmin Lucien Cabo, Bishop of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre, and Louis Albert Joseph Roger Sankalé, Coadjutbishop of Nice.
