The Cabinet of Prodi ruled Italy from 17 May 1996 to 20 October 1998. Prior to that, the Cabinet ruled Dini, then the Cabinet D'Alema I. The government of Prime Minister Romano Prodi was supported by the center-left alliance L ' Ulivo and some smaller parties.
After the collapse of the old party system and the parliamentary elections against Berlusconi in the spring of 1996, Romano Prodi continued the reforms of various predecessors and gave renewed impetus to reform. The main objective was the accession of Italy to the European Economic and Monetary Union. The dismantling of the left-wing Rifondazione Comunista, which criticized neoliberal tendencies, led to the resignation of the Prodi government in 1998.
