Baguirmi

The kingdom of Baguirmi or Bagirmi was an ancient sultanate located in what is now part of southwestern Chad.

Located southeast of Lake Chad, it was probably established in the 16th century. The king ruled from the capital city Massenya. Although the seventeenth century brought prosperity as a result of the slave trade, Baguirmi was prey to conflicts against the rival empires of the East and West. It was repeatedly looted in the 19th century and finally came under French control at the end of this century.
