Antimachus of Kolophon
Antimachos of Kolophon was an ancient Greek poet and grammarian from Kolophon. He was probably not very long after the middle of the fifth century BC, Born and perhaps still lived in the early 4th century BC. Chr. With his two principal works, the epic of Thebais (on the two mythical Theban wars), and an elegy cycle named after his deceased beloved Lyde, who treated the myths by the death of separated lovers, he was the founder of the epic. As such, he was the forerunner and model of the Alexandrins, who, because of his scholarship, placed him immediately after Homer. The fragments of his poems show a hard and sought-after language, often also sultry, and express more art and scholarship than poetry. As a grammarian, he gave a review of the homic poems.
