Portrait of Aunt Pepa sitting in an armchair


Portrait of Aunt Pepa sitting on an armchair is a pencil drawing of graphite on paper made in Malaga by Pablo Picasso in 1895 and part of the permanent collection of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, ​​by donation of the artist in 1970. It is cataloged with the code MPB 111.174.

It was part of an album made by the artist in 1895 in Malaga and Barcelona, ​​and made up of 36 drawings. The drawings on the album are mainly sketches of portraits of the artist's family, as in this case, and two works by Diego Velázquez.

This work shows Josefa Ruiz Blasco (1825-1901), sister of his father. She represents her sitting in an armchair, and full body. It is dated and signed as P. Ruiz in the lower right. It served as a precedent to Portrait of Aunt Pepa, oil on canvas of 1896 by the artist, also made in Malaga, and showing his half-body aunt. Both works are in the Picasso Museum of Barcelona, ​​donated by the artist the same year.
