Laos has a distinctive culture. Through Theravada Buddhism the culture of Laos has been influenced by India and also reflects the impact of aspects of Chinese culture. These influences are reflected throughout Laos as much in their language as in their art, literature, music and other artistic representations.

The way of life in Laos is very influenced by Buddhism as it is easy to observe the behavior and customs of the Lao people. They are taught to be patient and open. Buddhism has been a powerful element in providing a sense of unity and teaching people to be good and to avoid doing wrong in ancient times when there were no laws or means to enforce them.

An important festival in Laos is Boun Pha Vet which is held once a year. This is a two-day Buddhist festival that spans the entire community. Traditionally the Boun Pha Vet will be done during the month of January or February depending on the lunar cycle. During the ceremony the monks of the Sangha give a sermon on the chapters of the Vessantara Jataka (Maha Wetsandon Chadok), also called the Great Sermon of the Nativity.
