Richard Oakes (1942 - Santa Clara, California, 1972) was a Mohawk student, a member of the Iroquois White Roots of Peace group. He worked as a metalworker until he was admitted to the University of San Francisco. In 1969 he participated in the Alcatraz occupation along with Grace Thorpe and some future AIM members, and there he formed a committee led by himself and Cherokee Jeanette Henry and Rupert Costo, founders of the American Indian Historical Society, and Belva Cottier. He then went on to work for his own people until he was shot by a white man. No one has ever been convicted of this fact.
