Gotō Sumiharu


This is a Japanese name; the surname is {{{1}}}. Gotō Sumiharu (五 島 純 玄, Gotō Sumiharu who died in 1595) was a daimyō of the Azuchi-Momoyama period of Japanese history.

Sumiharu was the eldest son of Uku Sumitaka and at the age of twenty took the leadership of the clan. married a foster daughter of Matsura Shigenobu. Although originally his last name was Uku like its father, it decided to change it to Gotō later.

In 1587 he became a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, so he was present during the Japanese invasions of Korea under the command of Konishi Yukinaga. In 1595 he contracted smallpox, so he had to leave the battlefield. This illness caused him to die soon.

His son, Gotō Harumasa took the leadership of the clan upon his death.
