Michael Ekwoy Apochi received the priestly ordination on 19 July 1986. He was incardinated into the clergy of the Diocese of Otukpo on 10 July 1995.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Otukpo on 17 December 2002. The Apostolic Nuncio in Nigeria, Osvaldo Padilla, donated the bishop's ordination to him on 23 February 2003; Co-conquerors were Albert Kanene Obiefuna, Archbishop of Onitsha, and John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja.
