Regulatory Sequence

A regulatory sequence (also called regulatory region or "regulatory element") is a DNA segment where DNA binding proteins, such as transcription factors, are preferably linked. These regions or regulatory sequences, corresponding to normally short stretches of DNA, are properly positioned in the genome, usually a short distance "upstream" from the gene they regulate. As an example, these regulatory proteins can recruit the RNA polymerase protein complex and thus control gene expression and, therefore, protein expression.

Regulatory sequences can also be found in messenger RNA (mRNA), but are generally not as well studied as DNA. They could bind to RNA-binding proteins or micro RNA (miRNA). Examples
