Early years and political rise Edit source text
George Anthony grew up in his native New York, where he also attended public schools. After his father's early death, he was in desperate need of money and could only attend the schools in winter. In the summer he earned his money as a temporary worker on the farms of the area. Later, he completed an apprenticeship as a tin and copper forger with his uncle. During the Civil War, he was a captain of a New York state. By the end of the war he had ascended to Brevet Major.
After the end of his military period in June 1865, he moved to Leavenworth in Kansas. There he was busy with two papers. His career in public service began in 1867 with the US tax authority in Kansas. Between 1873 and 1876 he was chairman of the agricultural committee of Kansas. In 1876 he was nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for the governor elections. Governor of Kansas Edit Source
After his successful election, Anthony entered his two-year term on 8 January 1877. As governor he was known for his frugality. In his office, the first telephone was installed in Kansas. Also during this period, the last Indian wars occurred in the territory of that state. During the reign of Governor Anthony, a Fisheries Committee was established and a reform of the school system was launched. A railroad strike in 1877 was overrun by a tragic death when the National Guard accidentally shot a clergyman. In 1878 Anthony applied for his re-election. He failed, however, within his own party, which no longer nominated him. More CV Edit the source text
After the end of his term as governor, Anthony continued to participate in public life. From 1881 to 1883 he was the head of a Mexican railway company. In 1885 he was elected to the House of Representatives of Kansas. Between 1889 and 1893 Anthony belonged to the railway committee. In 1892, his attempt to be elected to the Congress failed. As the last public official, he held the post of an insurance commissioner of the Kansas government in 1895. George Anthony died in 1896 and was buried in Topeka. He was married to Rosa Lyon, with whom he had a child. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Governors of Kansas Standard data (person): LCCN: no99005997 VIAF: 7019931 Wikipedia People Search
