Papsukkal


Papsukkal is the messenger god in the Akkadian pantheon. It is identified in late Akkadian texts and is known mostly from the Hellenistic period, in Uruk. He acts both as a messenger and as a guardian for the rest of the pantheon. In its protective function can be found in amulets. His consort is Amasagnul.

As a vizier of the great gods, he resembles Ninshubur (vizier of Anu), with whom he became syncretized.

He is the ruler of the 10th month in the Babylonian calendar and is associated with the Orion constellation. Its symbol is a walking bird.

He had shrines in Kiš, Baylon and Akkil. In the latter, the Ekkil has been identified at the site of Mkish in Mesopotamia. Bibliography
